OHSAS 18001 Standard
Occupational Health and Safety had been center of attention
throughout the developed world for some time.  In Sri Lanka though
there  is a regulatory frame work the interest on Occupational Health
and Safety is drawing the attention only now.  We, Somaratna
Consultants believe OH&S as a very important area since Human
Resource is nothing but the most important asset of any organization.

Importance of a Management System approach was felt ever since
organizations identified there is a lack of consistency in implementing
controls against OH&S. Risks and identification that controls were
mostly reactive.  To overcome these, a Management System
approach was selected.  OHSAS 18001 was created via a concerted
effort from a number of the worlds leading national standards bodies,
certification bodies, and specialist institutes.  This standard has been
developed based on the BS 8800 standard and ISO 14001 standard
which was around for some time.
